'WWE 2K18' Universe Details And New Features Revealed; What Looks Great And What Could Go Wrong

It’s where fans get an opportunity to simulate a calendar year of WWE events, or even create their own alternate wrestling universe. On Monday, 2K released the details on the latest version of Universe mode in WWE 2K18.

The new game will still allow you to bring in your custom Superstars, championship belts, arenas and show brands. Wrestling fans love this option because it not only allows you to recreate the WWE, you can also create other organizations or even completely fictitious ones.

WWE 2K18‘s huge creation suite and the ability to download other members of the community’s custom content gives the mode a great base.

Rivalries are vital to any mode like this in a wrestling game and 2K has a new system. Feuds are supposedly built to form more organically, or you can simply assign participants. This year, feuds can take place between individuals or teams.

There will also be a buildup to the bigger rivalries. It’s like watching Raw or Smackdown when two Superstars or teams are mentioning the other in promos, only they haven’t come to blows just yet. Once the build-up is over, the actual feud can begin and that’s a pretty exciting structure.

Each rivalry will also have different intensity levels.

There’s low, medium, high and very high. Each color will bring about more intense and ruthless behavior between the feuding parties.

The in-mode calendar has also been changed. This year’s game is flexible enough to work with a structure that features more than one pay-per-view event per month. The description here was pretty vague, so more hands-on experience is necessary to gain a full understanding.

You’ve seen WWE Power Rankings on sites like ESPN and others. That concept will be implemented into WWE 2K18’s Universe mode. Each Superstar will be ranked based on their success. Winning big matches, championships and rivalries will raise a Superstar in the rankings.

Some Superstars will experience temporary attribute boosts to simulate the proverbial "push" we see real-life WWE wrestlers receive at various times over the course of a year. This is an ingenious way to capture the booking aspect of pro wrestling in a video game.

Each Superstar in your Universe will have his or her own goals. Whether it’s winning a championship, a feud or whatever. Everyone has their own motivation. This all sounds exciting, but let’s explore what could go wrong.

What Could Go Wrong?

Rivalry Logic – Anytime I see the word "rivalry" with respect to the Universe mode in a WWE 2K game I get nervous. The series has never been able to master this aspect of pro wrestling. While much of the section about rivalries sounds exciting, I’m wary of a potential issue with the logic that prevents the feud system from being any better than it has been in the past.

Poor Commentary Could Kill The Immersion For Rivalries – I’ve played an early version of WWE 2K18 and I was unimpressed with the commentary. When it comes to feuds and rivalries, the commentary plays an important role in selling the intensity.

Is it possible we could be left a little disconnected from the drama?

Pushes Could Be Too Few or Frequent Unless Manually Engineered - The concept behind the pushes is brilliant, but the game’s website doesn’t really tell us how frequently those pushes will take place or what triggers the temporary attribute boosts.

I don’t want to see 10 jobbers receiving a push at one time.

The Outlook

For the most part, the new and improved Universe mode sounds more like what fans of the feature have been wanting (minus the create-a-story feature), but we’ll have to give it an in-depth look before we can determine if it is as good as advertised.
