This week in RIT Athletics – October 3, 2017


ROCHESTER, NY — It was another action-packed weekend for RIT Athletics. Here is a look back to last week and a brief look ahead to another week of events at RIT for the week of October 3, 2017. For more information, check out www.ritathletics.com.

Men’s Soccer (3-5-1, 1-2-0 Liberty League):
Last Week: RIT went 1-1-0. The Tigers lost 2-1 in overtime at Hobart College Wednesday. Freshman Jared Short (Grafton, WI/Cedarburg) tied the score with his goal in the 53rd minute off an assist from classmate, Nick Simone (Hilton, NY/Hilton). The Statesmen tallied the game-winner in the 95th minute. Peter Cinibulk (Bellbrook, OH/Bellbrook) made three saves.

Saturday, Clarkson scored in the 10th minute. The Tigers equalized in the 72nd minute on a goal by Dean Kouroupas (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) off an assist from Anthony DeLeo. Junior Adam Bem (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) tallied the game-winner in the 100th minute off an assist from Joey Gianakopoulos (Bexley, OH/St. Charles Prep). Cinibulk picked up the win in net for RIT.

Adam Bem (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) – Liberty League Honor Roll
 
This Week: RIT plays at Liberty League rival, St. Lawrence University on Saturday, Oct. 7. St. Lawrence is 31-13-4 all time versus the Tigers. Last season, the Saints beat RIT 2-1 at Tiger Stadium. Charlton Kelly and Tapshak Augustine scored for the Saints, while Ahmed Alrefaei (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia/Al-Ahli) scored for the Tigers. RIT’s last win came in 2001.
 
This Week’s Schedule:
10/7     at St. Lawrence University – 3 p.m.

Women’s Soccer (6-3-1, 0-2-1 Liberty League):
Last Week: RIT went 0-2-0 last week. The Tigers were beaten 1-0 Wednesday by No. 6 William Smith College. Saturday, RIT went on the road and lost 1-0 at Clarkson University. Kelly Rogers (Ardmore, PA/Haverford) made five saves versus William Smith, and made two stops at Clarkson.

9/30     Clarkson University 1, RIT 0

This Week: RIT hosts St. Lawrence University on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. The Saints are 15-5-3 all time versus the Tigers. Last season, St. Lawrence beat the Tigers 5-0 in Canton, N.Y.

This Week’s Schedule:
10/7     St. Lawrence University – 3 p.m.

Volleyball (11-8, 1-1 Liberty League):
Last Week: RIT went 2-3 in five matches. The Tigers lost in five sets to University of Rochester on Tuesday. RIT won the first two sets, before the Yellowjackets rallied to win the three sets. Taylor Higgins (Peru, NY/Peru) led RIT with 15 kills, seven digs and two service aces. Erin Parkinson (Carrollton, TX/W.T. White) handed out a season-high 49 assists.
 
Friday, the Tigers beat Montclair State 3-1, and Nichols College 3-0. Joelle Marston (Roxbury, NJ/Roxbury) led all players with 17 kills. Higgins had 13 kills and six digs. Parkinson led the way with 44 assists to go along with 10 digs. Rebecca Bennett (Springfield, PA/Springfield) had 16 digs. Higgins tallied 11 kills and eight digs in a win over Nichols College. Kathryn Vogl (West Seneca, NY/St. Mary’s) had a career-high eight kills.
 
Saturday, the Tigers lost to DeSales and Kea. Higgins had 13 kills versus DeSales, while Taylor added 11 kills. Parkinson had 29 assists, while Bennett added eight digs. Higgins slammed a season-high 20 kills to go along with nine digs against Kean.

Honors and Recognition:
Taylor Higgins (Peru, NY/Peru) – Liberty League Rookie of the Week

This Week: RIT hosts Clarkson University in Liberty League action at 6 p.m. on Friday evening. Friday is RIT’s Tigers Dig Pink event. The Tigers hit the road to play at St. Lawrence University on Saturday at 4 p.m.
 
This Week’s Schedule:
10/6     vs. Clarkson University – 6 p.m.
10/7     at St. Lawrence University – 4 p.m.

Women’s Tennis (2-0, 0-0 Liberty League):
Last Week: Did not play last week.

This Week: RIT wraps up the fall portion of its schedule this week. The Tigers host William Smith College on Wednesday, and play at Skidmore College on Sunday, Oct. 9

This Week’s Schedule:
10/4     vs. William Smith College – 4 p.m.
10/8     at Skidmore College – TBA

Men’s Tennis (1-0, 0-0 Liberty League):
Last Week: The men’s tennis team lost at Daemen College Wednesday. Chandler Libby (Granby, CT/Granby Memorial) won the Tigers lone point, defeating Tim Georg, 6-1, 6-2 at first singles.

Libby advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Regional at Skidmore College over the weekend. He opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Zach Ebenfield of Rensselaer. Libby went on to beat Yanick Parsich of NYU, 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals. His run ended with a 6-0, 6-2 loss to Steven Koulouris of Skidmore in the quarterfinals.

9/30-10-2 competed at ITA’s (at Skidmore College)

This Week: RIT wraps up the fall portion of its schedule with a match at Skidmore College on Sunday, Oct. 8

Women’s Crew
Last Week: RIT Crew competed at William Smith College’s Challenge on the Canal Saturday. The varsity eight of Erin Loughran (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy), Colleen Albert (Burlington, CT/Lewis S. Mills), Emma Kate Flanagan (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs), Claire Thomas (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland), Mickyla Schnupp (Fairport, NY/Fairport), Olivia Sanders (Ashburn, VA/Stone Bridge), Hayley Richardson (Kennebunk, ME/Kennebunk), Helen Siegrist (Rochester, NY/Brighton) and Colleen Ryan (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) won their race in a time of 16:46.3.
 
Honors and Recognition:
Colleen Albert (Burlington, CT/Lewis S. Mills) – RIT Female Athlete of the Week

This Week: RIT will compete at the Head of the Genesee this Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. on the Genesee River.

Men’s Crew
Last Week: RIT Crew competed at the William Smith College’s Challenge on the Canal Saturday. The second varsity eight team of Joe Grosso (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Prep), Konstantin Hamilton (Gaithersburg, MD/Magruder), Tim Preskenis (Simsbury, CT/Simsbury), Nicholas Amendola (Buffalo,NY/Orchard Park), Tim Mastellar (Romulus, NY/Romulus), Jacob Southern, Dan Measer (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) and Nicholas Krzysiak (Utica, NY/Proctor) placed first in the race in a time of 15:04.3.

Honors and Recognition:
Christopher Atras (Willow Grove,PA/Archbishop Wood) – RIT Male Athlete of the Week

This Week: RIT will compete at the Head of the Genesee this Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. on the Genesee River.

Women’s Hockey (0-0-0, 0-0-0 CHA):
This Week: RIT opens the regular season on Oct. 6-7 at The College of the Holy Cross.

Men’s Hockey (0-0-0, 0-0-0 AHC):
This Week: RIT begins its 2017-18 campaign with an exhibition game this Saturday versus Brock University. The night before, the Tigers will play the Orange/White scrimmage for the first time since 2009, followed by their Skate With the Tigers events.
